Born in France,
Karen spent her childhood steeped in nature, aware and appreciative of
her natural surroundings. It is a connection that endured after moving
to the United States and living in the various habitats of the West
coast, East coast, Canada, and now Texas. While those journeys took
place, another one also took shape: the art appreciator became the art
maker.
Moved by
curiosity, and enticed by the promise of having the freedom to explore,
Karen signed up for a course on Creativity at the Visual Arts Centre in
Montreal. This course lead to three years of studio work, where she
continued to explore the idea that cultivating creativity is very much a
practice
rooted in the process.
Exploring has become her guiding
principle; it is the trust and respect of the process that is the heart
of her creative journey. It is also the strong belief that quite often
the journey is more important than the destination. This desire to
explore has lead her to various techniques and materials. Materials
become partners to her voice. Paper is currently her favorite partner in
that by exploring different weights, colors, and textures that are
available she is able to discover new ideas and themes to her work.
Currently, Karen
finds encaustic monotype is a process that very much suits her, offering
endless possibilities for exploring and continuing to cultivate and grow
her
creative voice.
