TREVA GILKEY Born in Oklahoma, I moved to Texas to pursue my career in fashion. I graduated from Texas Woman's University in Denton with a Bachelor's Degree in Clothing and Costume Design. I also have a Bachelor's Degree in Furniture and Interior Design, completed at the University of Texas at Arlington. My first love for art was at the age of 3, when my mom taught me how to draw Mickey Mouse out of circles. It was at that point that I began to create art out of many things, one being a ballerina collage made from navy beans and crayon shavings, which my grandmother still owns and cherishes. Soon after I began to study all forms of dance and continued to train until the age of 20. By the age of 20, I was exploring and studying all possible mediums and it was obvious that my true passions were interconnected with the arts. The uniqueness of my work stems from being a self-taught painter and by discovering the limitations of a brush, I mainly paint with my hands and sometimes feet. My work has evolved from realist figurative images in oils, acrylics and mixed mediums, to realism and abstractions, primarily in oils. There is a sense of movement with the use of rich and deep colors, which can be attributed to my background in dance and fashion. My work is a direct reflection of an exploration of feelings and emotions about the physical and imagined, resulting in work that possesses an intangible aspect that somehow strikes a familiar note. I have been commissioned to create many paintings, murals and special finishes in homes and businesses in Texas, Oklahoma, Nevada, Minnesota and California. I have had a collaborative show at Christopher Martin Gallery I(2000), Jackson Ivey-Jackson (2001)and Sambuca Jazz Club and Lounge, Deep Ellum (2002), Off The Grid @ Off The Grid (2009), I AM HERE @ Southside On Lamar (2009), Easy as 1,2,3 and ABC @ LumiArte Gallery (2009),including several independent shows in Dallas. I have donated artwork for the Troy Aikman & Emmitt Smith Foundation, Art + Advocacy (2008), The Boys and Girls Club of Collin County (2008) and The Art Of Skateboarding for Scottish Rites Hospital (2009) . I have also taught art and art history related classes in Oklahoma for the 21st Century After School Program and the Osage Tribe Boys and Girls Club in Oklahoma. Future projects include starting an After School Art Program and Gallery for Inner city and underprivileged children. I believe art is a necessity and one's self-expression of how we see our world around us. Art Is History; We Must Continue To Create It.
