provides multi-disciplinary training to professionals whose
job-related duties affect the physical and emotional protection
and treatment of children. The Center utilizes graduate
and postgraduate interns and serves as a training and educational
model in the area of child abuse for the State of Texas
and nationwide.

Stewards
of Children is a revolutionary sexual abuse prevention training
program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and
react responsibly to child sexual abuse, and motivates them
to courageous action. The Stewards of Children program is
designed for organizations and corporations that serve children
and youth.
The curriculum can be used by organizations and corporations
who are:
- Seeking training for staff and volunteers in the prevention
of child sexual abuse.
- Wanting to make a difference in their community by educating
adults about the protection of children.
- Needing to respond to insurance requirements regarding
child protection.
- Wanting to enhance community training initiatives and
develop potential sources of revenue.
A facilitator is a representative whom organizations send
to be trained on how to implement the Stewards of Children
program. This facilitator may provide the training within
a specific organization and/or in the broader community.
Facilitators attend an all-day workshop. They receive:
- A Facilitator manual
- A Stewards of Children workbook
- A Stewards of Children training tape (VHS/DVD)
- A Child Protection Policies and Procedures manual
- Membership in the Facilitator ListServ
- Authorization to purchase workbooks for training
- Training evaluation tools
- Access to a Facilitator Resources password-protected
area on the Darkness to Light website
- On-going support from D2L professional staff

Recognizing and Reporting
Child Abuse Seminars
“Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse” seminars
are conducted for human service organizations, school counselors,
nurses and teachers from throughout Dallas County. Third-year
medical students, during their pediatric rotation at the
University of Texas Southwest Medical Center, receive training
on recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect and
the multi-disciplinary approach used in the Advocacy Center
model.
Stewards of Children –
Training for Employees at Organizations and Corporations
that Serve Children and Youth
This program is delivered by a trained facilitator for
organizations and corporations that:
- Need training for staff and volunteers in the prevention
of child sexual abuse.
- Want to make a difference in their community by educating
adults about the protection of children.
- Need to respond to insurance requirements regarding
child protection.
Stewards of Children includes:
- An interactive workbook for each participant containing
the full program curriculum
- An accompanying 1 ¼ hour VHS/DVD integrating
segments of sexual abuse survivors relating their stories
of violation and healing, with segments from the author
of the curriculum and from professionals who interface
daily with the problem of sexual abuse
- Opportunity for discussion about important issues in
sexual abuse prevention and the relevance of these issues
within organizations that serve children and adolescents.
After training participants will:
- Understand the facts of child sexual abuse - incidence
rates and effects on individuals and society
- Understand how child sexual abuse happens
- Understand that adults are responsible for the protection
of children
- Understand the importance of screening staff/volunteers
who work with children and adolescents
- Understand the importance of a well conceived one-adult/one-child
policy
- Have resources to react responsibly to incidents of
child sexual abuse
- Understand the proactive role youth-serving organizations
need to take to protect children and educate their communities
about child sexual abuse
